CHURCH PROFILE

History and Current Status

El Encuentro Alliance Church was founded in 1994 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, by the Colombian missionaries Jairo and Diana Rojas along with members who were originally from Latin America. The previous pastor Manuel Morales retired in July 2022 after leading the church for more than 20 years. The facility is located on 2911 Edmonton Trail NE and it is shared with two other congregations. The service is offered on Saturdays at 7:00 pm.

The membership of the church consists of approximately 12 families for a total of approximately 30 active members. Most of them are originally from Latin America, which defines a predominant Latin ethno cultural background. The members connect with each other through the Christian faith, the immigration experience, the Spanish language, and strong family values. The members live in different parts of the city so they commute to come to church.

Ministry Status and Leadership and Culture

The leadership team consists of a Pastor (currently vacant) and 4 Elders. There are currently 4 active ministries run by volunteers: worship, children, prayer, and refreshments. The ministries have made significant positive impact in the lives of the members and their families.

The members verbally express deep gratitude for the work of each ministry and share the testimony of how their lives have been positively impacted. Running the ministries does require a high level of commitment with little or no room for rotating shifts every week.

Challenge and Opportunity

The current strength of El Encuentro Alliance Church is the level of commitment of the members. Strong sense of belonging to a Christ centered family, the power of prayer and serving the Lord have kept the church going without a pastor for more than 6 months. This strength also kept the church open while offering services, in-person and online throughout the entire pandemic in order to comply with restrictions imposed by the Government and Health Agencies. Without a doubt, the people represent the main resource of El Encuentro Alliance Church.

A candid review brings up three main challenges ahead for the ministry, and by extension, the church: provide a leadership that keeps the remaining members engaged, motivated and joyful to serve God; attract new members and challenge El Encuentro Alliance Church to truly live up to its mission and God’s calling/leading.
