Session 1

Jesus as Functional Head

In this first session of Flourishing Through Discernment, we explore what it means for Jesus to be more than the figurehead of the Church—to truly be the functional Head, actively leading His people in real-time decisions. Through practical teaching, pastoral reflection, and real ministry stories, this session invites leaders to consider what it looks like to give Jesus a genuine seat at the leadership table.

The video is organized in four parts. It begins with the foundational question, How do we know if Jesus is really leading our church? It then walks through 10 foundational convictions for hearing God's voice—such as relationship, Scripture, humility, obedience, practice, journaling, and confirmation. From there, it highlights 3 leadership habits that help teams regularly invite Jesus' input into discussions and decisions. Finally, the session brings these principles to life through a series of real church stories involving staffing, ministry direction, funding, baptism, and leadership discernment.

More often, it is about learning to notice the ways God brings clarity, confirmation, and peace as we seek Him with surrendered hearts.

This teaching introduces seven key lenses of confirmation that help believers discern God's direction: community, direction and calling, life/peace/freedom, Scripture, circumstances and details, character growth and development, and the life of Christ. Each lens offers a different way of paying attention to how God may be speaking, and together they form a rich, balanced approach to discernment that is both deeply biblical and highly practical.

Through personal stories, scriptural reflection, and guided questions for group discussion, this session helps pastors, leaders, and everyday disciples grow in confidence as they seek God's guidance. It offers a grounded and hopeful reminder that God is kind enough to lead His people, often through multiple layers of confirmation, as they learn to follow Him faithfully.
